Where I've Been

I was born in Reading,  Pennsylvania but have spent my entire life in the Lehigh Valley area. I graduated from William Allen High School in 1995 and the Pennsylvania State University in 1999 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. (Kinda funny, that B.S. thing).  I was married to my wife. Amy. in June of 2002 and while I am working on these classes, she is currently going back to school to become a teacher as well.

My Life as an Educator

Teaching 8th grade is extremely challenging, but also rewarding. 8th graders have their social lives on their mind and learning is something that happens between trips to the bathroom. However, they have very unique perspectives on life and the world that they live in.  Aside from the hormones, there are other things working in those minds and bodies that are fighting to be treated like adults, yet have one foot in childhood as well.  Teaching history is rewarding in itself as I constantly get to challenge what has truly changed over time.  My students get tired of hearing the analogy, but I feel that history is a giant jigsaw puzzle. First you must find all the pieces and then you have to put them altogether.  We must all collect the information and then apply it, so we learn from our mistakes.  My curriculum has changed over the past year (thankfully).  Last year, I was responsible for "covering" the dawn of man (Yeah Homo Habilis!) through the American Revolution (Go Paul Revere).  10,000 years of history in 180 days is quite challenging and the kids never seemed to get a whole lot out of it! However, we finally figured out that we needed a change, so I teach Early American settlements through the Civil War.  Living 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia, PA has made the teaching that much more meaningful as we have access to Valley Forge, Independence Hall, and the brand new Constitution Center.  The Constitution Center is one of my favorite places as it is a museum solely dedicated to an IDEA. Check it out HERE!

When I'm Not Working

Although teaching takes up a lot of my time, I coach Varsity football in Quakertown. Despite the fact that coaching at the Varsity level is a full time job in itself, I love it!!! I coach the offensive and defensive lines.  My wife always laughs at this, but I don't watch a lot of television...BUT I do watch a lot of sports.  Many times it's just background noise, but there are some things I devote my full attention to!  I am die hard fan of Penn State Football. the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Philadelphia Flyers.  Click on each name to see more about the Teams I love to root for.

Some of my hobbies include reading (especially about the Civil War) as well as playing the guitar. I have played an instrument my whole life.  My mom got me started on piano at age 3, saxaphone at age 10, and then I traded the saxaphone in for a guitar at age 19.  I love listening to music. There are many types of music I love to listen to. Some would call me rather "eclectic". Basically, I think that means I have good taste!  :)

My wife and I love to go to the movies! Going to the movies has become rather expensive around here, but we manage to get to the movies at least once a month and many times we will go to a matinee to save a few bucks. Of course, we always go out for a bite to eat right after the movies which puts us in the "Early Bird Special" category. My friends always joke that we are the oldest 26 year old couple they've ever known.

Web Sites I Like

I've already linked out to a few sites above that I frequent quite often.  Here are some other sites that I love to look at!

The Discovery Channel: No sports= Discovery Channel

The History Channel
: Another great place where you "get tricked into learnin' stuff" (as my students put it)

Firstgov: Great place to learn about our government and what is going on. Make sure to look for your local
congressman to see how they are voting on key bills. Get out there and VOTE!!!
